About SEOULIAN

A person of Seoul.
A culture shared outward.

SEOULIAN is an English-language utility magazine for using Seoul and understanding the people, memory, places, food, art, and ideas shaping Korea.

The word

SEOULIAN /soʊl-i-ən/ is our word for a person of Seoul. Like “New Yorker” or “Parisienne,” it describes more than residence: a way of participating in a city’s cultural imagination.

Our definition stays open. A Seoulian does not have to be physically confined to Seoul. Anyone who carries Korean culture into a generous exchange with the world can take part in the perspective.

The cultural mission

SEOULIAN’s internal compass comes from Kim Gu’s essay My Wish: the hope for a country rich in culture because culture can bring happiness to ourselves and to others. We interpret that as a responsibility to share knowledge with dignity, welcome, and care—not as a claim of cultural superiority.

The historical basis for this editorial principle is documented by the Kim Koo Museum & Library ↗.

What we cover

Start Here answers practical questions about arrival, movement, help, everyday life, and cultural context. Seoul Now carries current city signals. Essential Korea provides deeper original field notes across everyday life, food, craft, living heritage, K‑movie, K‑drama, webtoons, games, design, fashion, beauty, literature, and creative work.

U.S. Cultural Events connects readers with public Korean and Korean-American festivals, small workshops, exhibitions, screenings, food experiences and concerts. Every listing links to an original guide, admission details and sources. Discovery is scheduled daily; individual check times and overdue warnings distinguish scheduled work from verified updates.

The Korea Culture Archive supports deeper reading across eras and formats. It is reference material rather than the publication’s front door. Political and religious argument topics are outside the current utility and original-feature desks.

The editorial promise

We make Seoul and Korean culture easier to use and understand without presenting automated curation as original reporting. Facts stay attached to their source, adaptations are labeled, and the source’s contributor history remains one click away.

We preserve useful Korean terms when translation would erase context. Search interest is shown as a signal of attention—not as public opinion, approval, or importance.

Synthesis & forecasting

Our strongest stories combine at least two independent sources, preferably including a primary record. We separate verified facts, SEOULIAN interpretation, and prediction so the reader can see where evidence ends and editorial judgment begins.

Every prediction is labeled EDITORIAL FORECAST and includes a horizon, confidence level, signals to watch, and conditions that could prove it wrong. Forecasts are hypotheses to revisit—not reported facts or promises.

Sources & rights

The Korea Culture Archive

Each explainer is adapted and shortened from a fixed English Wikipedia revision. The post links to that exact revision and its contributor history, identifies the adaptation, and shares the adapted summary under CC BY-SA 4.0 ↗.

Original feature series

SEOULIAN features are newly written syntheses rather than translated or republished articles. Every installment keeps its own research links and fact-check date, separates documented facts from SEOULIAN interpretation, and labels any forward-looking judgment as an editorial forecast.

Essential Korea field notes

Each of the 50 field notes is an original English synthesis using two or more linked public, museum, heritage, language, tourism, or creative-industry sources. Source wording is not reproduced. The collection excludes political and religious argument topics, and every prediction remains visibly labeled.

Seoul city news

Current English city information comes from the Seoul Metropolitan Government RSS feed ↗. SMG states that City News press releases are treated as KOGL Type 1 ↗ by default. Cards retain the institution, year, source page, and license link.

Search trends

The Korea Pulse module uses the official Google Trends South Korea export ↗. We do not republish the third-party news thumbnails exposed by that feed.

Images

Rights-audited Wikimedia Commons media

Commons images are accepted only when the file is actually hosted on Wikimedia Commons, allows reuse, and provides the metadata needed to preserve Title, Author, Source, and License. The site stores a local copy instead of hotlinking. Each article prints the complete credit beside the work.

SEOULIAN Imagegen editorial photographs

If no suitable rights-complete image is available—or a representative file is already used elsewhere—SEOULIAN commissions one unique cover per story with ChatGPT Image Generation. The brief calls for a natural, candid SNS-photo look, but every credit still says it is AI-generated and not documentary evidence. The 50 Essential Korea covers were generated separately, visually reviewed as contact sheets, stored as original PNGs, optimized to unique WebP files, and registered by hash in the Imagegen manifest.

Daily source images

Daily city posts are published as image cards only when an approved source image can be stored and credited. There is no shared fallback thumbnail.

Daily automation

A server timer refreshes the edition every morning in Korea. The updater validates remote hosts, strips remote markup, limits downloads, rejects imageless visual cards, deduplicates canonical URLs, writes files atomically, and preserves the last known-good edition when a source fails.

The culture archive is a reviewed, fixed-revision baseline. Daily automation does not silently rewrite its source revisions or rights records, and article volume is not treated as a performance goal.

Advertising & revenue

Advertisements and promotional placements are visually separated from editorial work and labeled Advertisement or Sponsored. Advertisers do not choose SEOULIAN’s sources, conclusions, cultural interpretation, or forecasts.

Fashion Member manages SEOULIAN advertising and is the recipient of advertising revenue. The current LA WHALE house campaign uses a sponsored outbound link with campaign tags so its performance can be measured without disguising the placement as a story.

Google advertising is not active until the site is approved, the Fashion Member payment profile is verified, a compliant consent flow is available, and this site’s privacy disclosures are updated for the live configuration.
