A garment can suggest a person even when nobody is wearing it. For a first encounter with HyungJoo Kim's work, that is a useful place to begin: not with the demand to decode a symbol, but with the question of what an empty form makes you notice.

A title that works in two languages

Kim's published statement describes a practice in which mulberry paper is prepared and shaped into forms, rather than used only as a flat support for an image. Her official biography lists undergraduate and graduate study in fiber art at Hongik University. Those details help orient a visitor toward both structure and surface without reducing the work to a demonstration of traditional technique.

Our suggested looking exercise is simple. First, notice a work's outline from a comfortable distance. Then move closer, where permitted, to look at the surface. Finally, step back and ask whether the object now feels different. There is no requirement to have the same response as a companion; comparing the details each person noticed can be more revealing than agreeing on a single interpretation. Do not touch a work unless the gallery explicitly permits it.
