LA's First Korean Film Festival: Choose Curiosity Over a Familiar Title

Start with a question, not a viewing checklist

What if your next Korean film were one you had never heard of? For an English-speaking viewer whose reference points come mostly from streaming hits, a festival can be a chance to choose without an algorithm making the first move. Our suggestion: pick a story that raises a question, rather than trying to recognize every name on the schedule.

Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles has announced the inaugural Los Angeles Korean Film Festival: New Waves, New Voices for September 24–26, 2026, at Harmony Gold Preview House and KCCLA. The center's published announcement describes admission as free. USC's separately maintained event page also identifies those main festival dates and venues. This is a preview of announced plans, not a review of films we have watched.

Three ways into the program

The organizer describes a 19-film program. New Voice centers on contemporary independent and art cinema, with Yoon Ga-eun's The World of Love announced as the opener. Spotlight brings established work into conversation with invited guests Kim Jee-woon and Yoo Ji-tae. Next Scene focuses on short films from the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival. An additional AI-and-cinema program is announced. These are program announcements, not guarantees that every guest or session will remain unchanged.

SEOULIAN interpretation: those strands offer different starting points. Choose a feature if you want time to settle into one filmmaker's world. Choose a short-film program if you enjoy comparing approaches. A conversation with a filmmaker can be useful even when you disagree with the film; a thoughtful question is more valuable than trying to prove expertise.

Do not confuse unfamiliar with difficult, or independent with automatically better. Give yourself permission to enjoy one scene, dislike another and leave with a question. That is already a worthwhile evening at the movies.

The USC date is a separate stop

USC advertises a related Oldboy screening on Tuesday, September 22 at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A with actor Yoo Ji-tae, at the Eileen Norris Cinema Theater, 3507 Trousdale Parkway. This is not a September 24–26 screening at either main festival venue.

For that USC event specifically, admission is free and an RSVP is required. USC lists doors at 6:30 p.m. and warns that reservations do not guarantee a seat: its screenings are overbooked and admission is first-come until capacity. These conditions should not be assumed to apply identically to the main festival. Oldboy is not a light family outing; check the film's content before choosing it for your group.

Build a one-screening plan

Use the organizer's Eventbrite page to check the individual listing before setting out. Confirm the film, date, venue, language or subtitle information, age guidance and reservation conditions for that session. We have not verified current seat availability or a festival-wide subtitle policy. Free admission should not be read as free parking or a guaranteed walk-in seat.

Our practical suggestion is to start with one screening and leave time afterward to talk. Ask a friend which moment stayed with them before discussing whether the film was good. You may discover that you were watching different details in the same room. Avoid squeezing two venues into a tight transfer simply because their sessions fit next to each other on a timetable.

What we checked—and what we did not

Checked September 12, 2026, Los Angeles time. We read KCCLA's attributed press release and USC's own screening notice. Beverly Press also carries a preview, but much of it follows the organizer's release, so it is not treated as another independent confirmation. USC is a participating institution, not a neutral review outlet.

Direct access to the cultural center's event page encountered a redirect loop, and the Eventbrite organizer page could not be reliably opened during this check. Accordingly, this preview does not publish a detailed session timetable or claim booking availability. Follow the official links for current reservations.
